Excerpt: The 1951 Accord , also known simply as the Accord , was an agreement between the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve that restored independence to the Fed.During World War II , the Fed pledged to keep the interest rate on Treasury bills fixed at 0.375 percent. It continued to support government borrowing after the war ended, despite the fact that the Consumer Price Index rose 14 % in 1947 and 8 % in 1948, and the economy was in recession . President Harry S. Truman in 1948 replaced then Chairman of the Federal Reserve Marriner Eccles with Thomas B. McCabe for opposing this policy, although Eccles’s term on the board would continue for three more years. The reluctance of the Fed to continue monetizing the deficit became so great that in 1951, President Truman invited the entire Federal Open Market Committee to the White House to resolve their differences. William McChesney Martin , then Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, was the principal mediator. Three weeks later, he was named Chairman of the Fed, replacing McCabe.References (URLs online) A hyperlinked version of this chapter is at The 1951 Indianapolis 500 was held on Wednesday, May 30, 1951 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway . A House Of Pomegranates, The Happy Prince And Other Tales $21.19 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:THE FISHERMAN AND HIS SOUL EVERY evening the young Fisherman went out upon the sea, and threw his nets into the water. When the wind blew from the land he caught nothing, or but little at best, for it was a bitter and black-winged wind, and rough waves rose up to meet it But when the wind blew to the shore, the fish came in from the deep, and swam into the meshes of his nets, and he took them to the market-place and sold them. Every evening he went out upon the sea, and one evening the net was so heavy that hardly could he draw it into the boat. And he laughed, and said to himself, ‘ Surely I have caught all the fish that swim, or snared some dull monster that will be a marvel to men, or some thing of horror that the great Queen will desire,’ and putting forth all his strength, he tugged at the coarse ropes till, like lines of blue enamel round a vase of bronze, the long veins rose up on hisarms. He tugged at the thin ropes, and nearer and nearer came the circle of flat corks, and the net rose at last to the top of the water. But no fish at all was in it, nor any monster or thing of horror, but only a little Mermaid lying fast asleep. Her hair was as a wet fleece of gold, and each separate hair as a thread of fine gold in a cup of glass. Her body was as white ivory, and her tail was of silver and pearl. Silver and pearl was her tail, and the green weeds of the sea coiled round it; and like sea-shells were her ears, and her lips were like sea-coral. The cold waves dashed over her cold breasts, and the salt glistened upon her eyelids. So beautiful was she that when the young Fisherman saw her he was filled with wonder, and he put out his hand and drew the net close to him, and leaning over the side he clasped her in his arms. And when he touched her, she gave a cry… |

Black Men Built the Capitol: Discovering African-American History in and around Washington, D. C. $14.95 Millions of people visit the National Mall, the White House, and the U.S. Capitol each year. If they only hear the standard story, a big question remains: “Where’s the black history?” Packed with new information and archival photos, Black Men Built the Capitol answers this question. In this thoroughly researched yet completely accessible volume, Washington insider and political journalist Jesse J. Holland shines a light on the region’s African-American achievements, recounting little-known stories and verifying rumors, such as: • Enslaved black men built the Capitol, White House, and other important Washington structures.• Philip Reid, a thirty-nine-year-old slave from South Carolina, cast and helpedsave the model of the Statue of Freedom that sits atop the Capitol Dome. • The National Mall sits on the former site of the city’s most bustling slave market.• The grounds that are now Arlington National Cemetery were, from 1863 to 1888, a self-sustaining village for former slaves called the Freedman’s Village. Included are hundreds of places in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia that illuminate “the rest of the story” for Washington residents and visitors alike. |

Cholera had descended upon the community and they begged me to go to Mr. Brooks’ office and return at once, and not to be in the sun any more than was necessary. I had no fear. Having come from so serious an illness I did not feel that another malady would attack me soon. As I walked along I could see that the boundless prairie was around me. I inhaled the spaciousness of the scene. I could see the deep woods which stood beyond the rich prairies of tall and heavy grass. The town was built roughly of hewn logs. It was like a camp of hastily constructed shacks. But a college had already been founded. It had two buildings, one of logs and one of brick. I looked back to see that the Spurgeon house was substantially built, with care and taste. . . . Mr. Brooks’ office was in one of the log structures about the square. One entered it from the street. I counted the signs of eleven lawyers on my way. The tavern where I had stayed, except for Douglas and Miss Spurgeon, was a most uninviting place. Mr. Brooks sat behind a rude table. Back of him on a wall were a portrait of Washington and a map of Illinois. On the table there was a lawbook of some sort. Altogether there were three chairs in the room. The floor was made of puncheon boards, and was bare. Flies buzzed in the air and at the rude |

Back of him on a wall were a portrait of Washington and a map of Illinois. On the table there was a lawbook of some sort. Altogether there were three chairs in the room. The floor was made of puncheon boards, and was bare. Flies buzzed in the air and at the rude |

The Slave market at Cairo. — Tomb of the Pacha. — The Pyramid of Cheops. — Oppressive Attentions of the Arabs. — The Sphinx. Nearly all the time I was at Cairo, Paul and myself were ill, and for a few days we were in rather a pitiable condition. Fortunately, a young English army surgeon was there, on his way to India, and hearing there was a sick traveller in the house, he with great kindness called upon me, and prescribed for our ailments. If this book should ever meet the eye of Dr. Forbes, he will excuse my putting his name in print, as it is the only means I have of acknowledging his kindness in saving me from what would otherwise have been a severe and most inconvenient illness. At that time there was no English physician in Cairo, and I believe none at all, except some vile, half- bred Italian or French apothecaries, who held themselves fully qualified to practise, and were certainly very successful in relieving the sick from all their sufferings. On my return I found Dr. Walne, arid though for his own sake I could wishhim a better lot, I hope, for the benefit of sick travellers, that he is there still. On Friday evening a mass meeting was held in a great Temporary- Hall, especially erected for the occasion on the site of the Canton Market from plans prepared by Messrs. Harris and Harris, of Birmingham, and under the local supervision of Messrs. Richards and Budgen, of Cardiff. The hall was crowded to its utmost capacity, over 10,000 persons being present, and the proceedings throughout were characterised by the utmost enthusiasm. The time prior to the commencement of the meeting was occupied by the singing of Welsh hymns and tunes led by ” Mabon ” (Mr. William Abraham, M P., Rhondda). The chair was taken by Mr. Robert Bird, President of the Cardiff Liberal Association. The Chairman, who was loudly cheered, said : My lords, ladies, and gentlemen, — I am sure I am only echoing the feelings of this great meeting when I say that we accord to Lord Rosebery a very hearty welcome. We hope that the political atmosphere of Wales will suit his lordship’s constitution and that he will come again soon. Well, gentlemen, we are on the winning side. I do not say that because of this great and magnificent meeting, but because all history attests to the fact that the Liberal Party has never yet lost a battle. It has often been humbugged by the Tories, it has often been hindered and delayed by the House of Lords, but its great measures have always been carried in the end — sometimes by our opponents, when they can no longer resist the will of the people, |
